I think this group is needed since there isn't any real product support
(except Business Edition) I would participate if the group survives as I
deploy asterisk in many locations.

Hello All -
Personally, I don't join a group specific to a topic to hear about all
the competing topics (or products). I'm of the opinion that the user
group should change the name if this is going to be a general discussion
about telephone and phone switch solutions. I would consider
discussions about other solutions 'off-topic'.
Cheers,
Benjamin

Hi Mark,
I'd like to start out by throwing out a controversial remark. Don't take
this the wrong way, perhaps it can help in addressing your concerns.
I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't me who bad mouthed asterisk. After
all there is a ton wrong with it. There are, as you say, competing
solutions that handle much of what asterisk does far better. That of
course, is my opinion.
Now I feel that I know VoIP pretty well. Furthermore I think I know
asterisk and it's competing solutions pretty well. That being said, I
think it's fair to address what you don't like about asterisk and how
competing solutions compare. If I say, "Asterisk isn't any good because
there is no way to build in redundancy", then someone who knows
otherwise should chime in with their experiences. If it's determined
that Asterisk can't do what competing solutions can, then I'd say that's
a worthwhile discussion as well.
As much as it's an "Asterisk Users" discussion group, I think it makes
us all more versed in the product and the technology in general in
knowing exactly where Asterisk fits in with BOTH competing and
complementary solutions.
The problem arises from people who take criticism of Asterisk the wrong
way, or express blatant generalizations like "Asterisk sucks". I think
it's totally acceptable, and even welcomed to discuss what's wrong with
asterisk and how competing solutions address similar situations better.
In discussing this we can either learn to develop with asterisk in new
and interesting ways, or learn about other technologies that complement
or otherwise replace asterisk. Which I think is perfectly acceptable.
All in all, I see the group about Asterisk. However, I see all community
participation in such technologies really being about mastery of the
technology and shouldn't be so limited to ONLY what you love about
Asterisk.
That's my *opinion*. :)
Unrelated side note: Can we set up a wiki for the group? I'd like to see
a list of knowledgeable asterisk consultants in the area.
Thanks!

Jim and All,
I would like to see this group be active and constructive. The problem
the last time that someone tried to get the group going was that there
were at least a couple of people who wanted to "bad mouth" everything
Asterisk. They were apparently trying to support a competing solution.
Nobody wants to be part of a group like this if it is just going to be
infighting.
If the group had some very basic rules, it might correct this problem.
There are many other very good Asterisk groups around the country that
it could be modeled after.
I am putting this out there as food for thought and looking for opinions
of others.
Lets get this group started again in a way that it can be sustained and
people will want to participate and present.

Brett and I were talking and thought it was high time we have a
meeting before this group totally dies on the vine.
Does anyone have some topics they would like to speak on or have
someone speak on?
I can talk about my strategy to deploy asterisk phone systems to
dental and medical offices.
Anyone else?
